Lesson No 4- Qualitative and Quantitative Research

Chapter Four- The New Openings-A Case Study Research

History In Makings

I did some quantitative researches during my undergrads. There was one particular incident that I remembered most. The faculty got a new SPSS psychology lab at my uni,  sixteen years back or maybe more. It was Prof Dr Nizar Alani Research Method II class. I chose California Personality (CPI) test as my instrument. I tried out the lab with my analysis and I got data as much piles as my knee level. The "numbers'  in the data was too many for me to interpret but to my amazement I like on what I am doing. I went pages by pages until the piles was finished and I came out interpreting with the guidelines given by the test. It was hard work but was make easier because it is a standardize test which have guidelines for users like me. It took me another one week to understand the data analysis and translated it into writings. I felt the satisfaction when doing the research. However, now, it is different era, I was told by Ateff, the current SPSS version is version 17. I was at one of those people whose SPSS experience is outdated and added to the statistics of students who do not understand SPSS. I need to relearn.

The New Frontier-A Case Study

Prof Haji Izaham, the Dean of Education Faculty asked the class and me during this week class, do you know about behavioral statistics, I said I did it, last sixteen years ago and I forgot about it. He said that understanding of the manual calculation is important, so that, when SPSS compute our data, we will understand what sort of data we have and how to interpret it. He added that in quantitative, the analyzing part is too mechanical and boring, therefore, he suggested, as if, we as a class to do qualitative research. There are several examples given by him which one I remember, that a prestige  university even forced their students to do qualitative research instead of quantitative research for their master and doctorate programmes. I wander, can I do a qualitative research. Let's gamble and try out a qualitative one. Therefore, need to seek advices from some lecturers, Dr F, Dr H, Prof K and Dr I. The combinations of information from them, I reckoned would be helping me to decide. Covert operation is activated. I think I am getting old to do quantitative, slower learner I am now. Need to do somethings else and case study of qualitative might me the answer. Trial and error and I am hoping, I will sort this out before the end of this semester. Here I go qualitative, and here I go case study. Wish me luck.
