Chapter 5: How to select sample : Which is which
Sampling is to draw study from participants of a research and generalized back to population. There are two sampling which is random i.e. equal chance to be sample and non random i.e.purposive sample, selected sampling decided by authority. Random sampling method has three types which are simple, stratified and cluster.Non random sampling also have three types which are systematic, purposive and convenience. There are four steps when deciding in sampling (1) Define population to be sampled, (2) determine sample size, (3) control bias and error and (4) select sample. Qualitative research sampling has five types which are intensified, homogenous, criterion, snowball and random purposive. The different with quantitative is that the sample selected is small in numbers and it findings and results cannot be generalized into the population. In conclusion, sampling a population describes the procedures researchers use to select individuals to participate in a study.
From Theory to Practice
My sample would consist of a Chinese student, an Indian student and a Malay student. It will determine whether they write differently from each other. From the notes above, my sampling is qualitative, non random, criterion sampling by which is decided by me to be done in a military context institution and in a Malaysian context learning institution. After a fruitful discussion with the Dean, Prof Izaham said, it is not enough by doing research on just the differences between ethnics groups, and three participants are not enough. He added that something else must be added to the demographic variables, for example sample or (participants) from different courses or sampling from different age group or maybe others. So, following his advice, therefore, my research would select sample based on differences of ethnics groups, genders, age group and the number of participant is six participants. In conclusion, this would be my sample of my future dissertation paper unless my future supervisor say something else.
